From subatomic physics to caring for the homeless, and from tracking down wild mink to exploring the future of mobile technology, our speakers managed to poke the comfort zone in more ways than we had hoped for and, of course, our brilliant performers managed to again touch the hearts of the audience.

Our live stream viewership climbed to three thousand concurrent viewers and stayed there, with the total online audience hitting over twenty-five thousand. They tuned in from some fifty countries – from the exotic (Kazakhstan, Maldives, Qatar and Bangladesh) to pretty much every European country, the Americas and Down Under.

TEDx has just turned four and the total number of events worldwide is rapidly heading towards seven thousand and TEDx Talks (as opposed to TED Talks) have been viewed over eighty million times online. We were therefore particularly pleased to host TEDx organisers from all around Poland and the general neighbourhood and glad to see that Ideas Worth Spreading are indeed spreading at an increasing pace.

To keep in touch with us, please head for tedxwarsaw.com/organisation, find each member’s Twitter ID and tweet away! Of course, you can also just follow @tedxwarsaw, too. To keep an eye on what’s going on, do drop by this page and come say hi on Facebook. We have some cool things coming up this year, so be sure to keep up to date.

Not only can we all sing, says Zofia Borkowska, but we can also sing well. All it takes is determination and practice. Having worked in and around choirs for some 25 years, Zofia should know. A professional choir conductor and a graduate of the Frederic Chopin University of Music, she is the leader of an amateur choir which came together spontaneously in 2006 and has since gone on to win many prizes and perform nationwide and abroad, including concerts with the Warsaw Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the noted Italian singer Andrea Bocelli and at the mass for John Paul II’s beatification.

As a professor of leadership and senior advisor to government and the private sector, Cezary Wójcik has as much witnessed much of Poland’s transformation into a market economy as been an integral part of it. As the country continues to evolve, Cezary comments on the value of what has been achieved and what remains on the “to do” list. He pushes us to reflect on what is really possible and how we should change our thinking and a sense of responsibility for Poland’s future.

From his home well inside the woods of Białowieża, Europe’s last remaining lowland old-growth forest, Adam Wajrak has – since the early 1990′s – kept up a steady flow of newspaper articles, television programmes and books which focus on the urgent need to protect what little remains of our natural heritage. A noted specialist in the field and recipient of numerous accolades, both within Poland and worldwide, Adam casts his unflinching eye on the irreversible effects of man’s continuing encroachment on the natural habitat.

Belgian adventurer Louis-Philippe Loncke has walked across Australia’s Simpson Desert, arranged the World’s highest chocolate tasting for charity (at the Mt Everest Base Camp) and traversed Iceland on foot in winter but for the trip he will tell us about he packed what he could into a kayak and paddled down the Vistula from its source – taking in the geography and the history served up by the people he encountered. Louis-Philippe began his career as a management consultant but since 2000 has devoted himself to exploration and adventure.

Life choices don’t have to be hard if we have enough social support provided by people who already possess enough life experience. Zuzanna Lewandowska is working to bridge the gap between young students and experienced “elders” in a structured programme aimed at Polish youth studying abroad. She believes that it is our social responsibility to figure out what we know that ‘s useful, and how best to pass it on to those who need this knowledge.

Aga Szóstek’s single-minded pursuit of human-centered design has helped companies big and small develop far-reaching strategies aiming at satisfying basic needs of customers as a fundamental principle of design. User Experience is a term much lauded these days – Aga believes that its most elegant expressions boil down to “dream, design, build”, while the discipline of design should be understood as far broader than we currently allow it.

A Deputy Director of a public television network ought to be well placed to comment on the state of the industry. In the case of Andrzej Godlewski, his long journalism experience in print and electronic media also gives him the wisdom and insight to enable him to pass judgement on the current psychology of the medium, and it is far from glowing. Do we enjoy watching aggression and therefore television serves it up to us, or is it the other way around? In either case, how much hate exactly is enough?

Oh, did we mention we’re going to get a visit from our old F.R.I.E.N.D.S? Well, we’re saying it now – F.O.U.R.S. are coming back with some new material and the same awesome energy and flair that made them the stars of last year’s conference. Please welcome back Michał Salamon on keys, Staszek Plewniak on saxophones, bass player Szymon Frankowski and Szymon Madej on drums. Yep, we’re happy, too!

Have you noticed how a scary movie is less scary if you cover your ears? Sound in film, television and in daily life affects us more than we realise, and sound designers like Wojciech Urbański work with it as a sculptor would with raw material. Wojtek has created soundscapes for commerce and sound effects for films and audio books, and will take us on a short but eventful journey, with our eyes shut and ears open.

Adrianna Patłaszyńska has been dancing since the age of five and studying dance since she was thirteen. For the last few years she has consistently been in the top three at the World Championships in modern dance and has performed (and collected awards) in Canada, Germany, Russia, South Africa, the US and Norway, as well as all over Poland. In addition to studying – and teaching – dance, Ada is also currently preparing for her matriculation.

Audrey Scott and Dan Noll have been “measuring the Earth with their feet” for over six years and although they have visited close to eighty countries and seen their share of tricky situations, they agree that the scariest moment in their life of travel was at the very start – when they handed in their resignations. As a husband-and-wife team they are busy running one of the World’s most popular travel blogs, and proving that there is more to life than material pursuits.

Zoologist Joanna Bagniewska is interested in using technology in answering the big HOW questions of biology: how do we know what animals do in the wild, how can we measure it? She has researched the behaviour of numerous species, from wombats to jackals, on four continents, and her doctoral thesis centered on using miniaturised data logging devices to study wild American minks. When not counting wild beasts or lobbying for education reform – her other passion – she can be found on a ballroom floor.

Very soon, “mobile” will mean a lot more than simply a small box you slide into your pocket. Wearable technology and integration of mobile communications with the physical world will result in seamless experiences, allowing us to interact with the “Internet of Things” – for better or worse. Mikela Eskenazi is a mobile industry strategist based in London who draws freely on her multicultural heritage (Swiss, Turkish and Polish) and her global education and experience in advising clients around the World. Mikela is also the organiser of TEDxParcDesBastions.

According to thought leaders in the field, including our speaker Richard Kastelein, television as we know it is in the process of complete disruption and re-design from the ground up. As a global consultant and speaker on the subject and as the founder of TV Hackfest London and San Francisco and publisher of TV Appmarket he ought to know. Richard has guest lectured at MIT Media Labs and has helped broadcasters on three continents with their media convergence strategies, from his twin bases in London and Groningen.

Experimental particle physics, in addition to helping science understand the basic fabric of the universe, has been the source of immediately useful technologies. Accelerator and nuclear physicist Piotr Skowroński comes to us from CERN where he has been a staff researcher since 2009, following a long association with the centre which goes back to his student days. He and his colleagues are currently designing CERN’s future giant particle accelerator called CLIC.

Sister Małgorzata Chmielewska believes in a practical approach to the basic commandment to “love thy neighbour.” She has founded seven homes for the homeless, created a stipend fund which supports many hundreds of students from disadvantaged families and works to eliminate social exclusion through numerous activities nation-wide. She has also brought up five foster children of her own.

“Some people just don’t have the language learning gene.” To prove that this statement is patently untrue is Benny Lewis’s life mission. A monoglot till after leaving university, Benny now runs the World’s most popular language learning blog and has been travelling around the globe as a “technomad” for ten years. He is now learning Egyptian Arabic which will be language number twelve, or maybe thirteen. But who’s counting?

Finalist in the TEDTalks talent search, storyteller Kristin Pedemonti performs worldwide, connecting cultures through the power of story, to engender hope, joy and understanding. She has performed at festivals from New York City to Naples and Berlin to Bogota and is never without her “Free Hugs” sign, which she employs on subways, bus stations and street corners wherever she goes. In 2005, Kristin sold her home and most of the stuff in it to found the volunteer project Literacy Outreach Belize, donating educational programmes for over 33’000 students.

This year’s TEDxWarsaw is just around the corner so it’s high time we began introducing our speakers – and what a stellar group of people they are… We will be announcing a new group every week from now. Stay close. There’s news afoot. Let’s begin.

May we introduce:
Jonathan MacDonald, strategist and crystal ball gazer. From his London base he advises global clients on product marketing strategy and execution and is a frequent speaker on the space where technology meets business, usually from an unexpected perspective.

Katarzyna Miller is a Polish psychotherapist with many years’ experience. In her own practice and through sharp observation she takes the emotional pulse of the nation and comments on it in a steady output of books and regular media appearances.

Finnish oceanographer Hanna Paulomäki has been focusing on the severe and urgent problems which plague the Baltic Sea. Lack of an organised approach to fishing and marine protection has resulted in a woeful state for this body of water; Hanna and her colleagues are working to change that.

Mark Borkowski, one of the UK’s leading PR mavens, has contributed to the careers of a number of well-known entertainers and the success of companies and NGOs whose names we all know but what really interests him are the Great Mavericks – the people he calls Adventure Capitalists.
