As you supposedly know, another TEDx is taking place pretty soon in the land of Chopin, Copernicus and Maria Skłodowska-Curie. Since this event is planned to be conducted entirely in Polish, the press release is also in our native language.

W Poznaniu zaprezentują swoje idee m.in.: prof.

Doskonale wpisuje się w nową strategię promocji stolicy Wielkopolski – “Poznań * Miasto Know-How”.

———

Our comment:
If you are still rozważasz, czy warto wybrać się 28 maja do Poznania, podpowiadamy: WARTO!

The TEDxWarsaw Team has put together an impromptu event inspired by the spectacularly disruptive Eyjafjallajokull eruptions, to the theme of “It’s impossible. But doable.” Called TEDxWulkan (Volcano in Polish), the event will be held at Stocznia (”The Shipyard”) which is part think tank, part social hub and part collaborative work space in the heart of Warsaw (map).

We’ve been inspired by the events in Iceland, their influence on our daily lives and by trying to see how our economies and communities might cope with the fallout, but rather than concentrating solely on things to do with volcanoes, we would like to use TEDxWulkan this as an opportunity to look at Explosive Ideas and Impossible Dreams and see how those might actually be accomplished. (Down to the tools and practical ideas.) We will be looking at historical precedents where natural events changed the course of history, new ways of doing business without relying on huge infrastructure, and other aspects of life and work as affected by this huge natural phenomenon.

The event is being organised by the TEDxWarsaw Team (albeit in a reduced skeleton staff kind of way) but this is not a replacement for TEDxWarsaw, nor its next installment. The format is very different from TEDxWarsaw, too. Talks to conversation time ratio will be 1 : 1, with two hours of talks interspread with two hours of breaks. We are creating a much more intimate event (only 100 participants or so) with plenty of opportunity for the speakers and audience to interact. We start at 14:00 on Sunday and finish at 18:00 – short and sweet.

Speakers include Ivan Hernandez, Patrick Trompiz and Pawel Szczęsny whom you know from TEDxWarsaw plus Barbara Jakubek, Michał Marcinkowski, Michał Śliwiński, Tomasz Kolinko, Krzysztof Bielecki and Paweł Urbański.

Tune into the TEDxWulkan live stream, compliments of our friends at StreamOnLine.pl here.

Would you like to embed it on your website? Click here to get the code.

The speakers are putting the last finishing touches to their presentations, the technicians are rolling out their cables and setting up boxes of serious-looking equipment, the team are all hard at work in their various assigned roles. Actually, now is probably a good moment to say thank you to the entire team, some of whom have worked essentially full-time over the last few weeks to bring you TEDxWarsaw. In case you are wondering, no we are not getting paid to do this and yes we all have day jobs. But we accept hugs and handshakes as thank-yous!

Tomorrow we open registration at 09:00 and start the first session at 10:00 sharp so please make sure you’ve picked up your badge before 09:45, AT WHICH POINT THE LADIES AT REGISTRATION WILL START TO ASSIGN THE NO-SHOW SEATS TO THOSE OFF THE WAITING LIST WHO HAVE SHOWN UP, on a first-come-first-served basis. This assignment will be CONDITIONAL and temporary, pending the arrival of the registered and confirmed person. Please understand that we are trying our best to make this work – we are grateful for your co-operation.

We have a huge number of people on the waiting list so, please, if you know you are not going to be able to make it, send us an email RIGHT NOW so we can re-assign your seat.

We have a very full day ahead so come rested. Expect to be challenged, inspired, confronted, enlightened and entertained. Yes, we have technology, entertainment and design but we also have science, art, meditation, social work and music, lots and lots of music. We are going out on the edge for you, testing assumptions as well as technology. A lot of the ideas you will hear (all of them worth spreading) will be outside of the usual. We can pretty much guarantee that all of the performances will leave you gaping. We are also hoping that the gods of technology will be with us for some of those.

If you’re Tweeting use the hashtags #tedxwarsaw or #tedxwaw and follows us @tedxwarsaw for any last minute announcements. Please, if you are planning to live-blog or tweet from the event, sit in the last three rows. There is no reserved seating except for the front row which is for our speakers. Photographs and video are welcome of course, but DO NOT USE FLASH OR LIGHTS. Modern digital cameras are very sensitive and you will be asked to cease if you use a flash. If you get some cool pictures we would love you to share them with everyone. Send us a link to the upload or email us the files as we will be putting together a commemorative slideshow.

Naturally, no cellphone conversations are allowed in the auditorium during the sessions.

So come rested and bring lots of enthusiasm. You will be expected to participate in some lively discussions. The wait is nearly over. See you tomorrow.

You asked, so here it is. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design and these were the original “subjects” for what twenty five years ago began as a conference which looked at the impending confluence in these three areas. This confluence is now a fact of life and the original organiser of the conference, American architect and designer Richard Saul Wurman has moved on to other projects. Several incarnations later, TED is a global community, still centered around conferences which take place in the US, UK and, recently, in India but which now includes hundreds of thousands of people who are excited about ideas worth spreading.

The foundation which runs the conferences and curates the main website, ted.com, has released what is both an incredibly clever way of broadening the reach of the TED brand and a method of liberating latent creative energy of the intelligent masses. They call it TEDx, a series of TED-like events around the world, independently organised by teams of passionates in each location. The locations so far have been as diverse as the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, Kibera – the largest urban slum in Africa, in Nairobi, and Shekhawati, a rural area in Rajasthan (where they had to find and bring in hundreds of extra chairs since the crowd just kept getting bigger.)

Banjamin Zander, an orchestra director who spoke at TED recently, has said that TED is about releasing power. We have already witnessed this in the course of organising our event – bright people naturally gravitate towards other bright people, fueled by the excitement of finding new possibilities and opening doors to rich personal connections with people one would not usually meet.

Other than the high quality, concentrated talks given by people accomplished in a whole range of disciplines, the most exciting thing about these gatherings are the compelling conversations they engender – indeed, one of the guiding principles of the TED community is that it should be a space where spontaneous conversations can take place, inspired by the content of the talks. At TEDxWarsaw we are very much following this ethos of allowing a wave of excitement to build and cary the participants into places where they may not have ordinarily gone.

We have curated a very diverse group of speakers for this inaugural event, some of them well known nationally and beyond the borders of this country, others known only within their disciplines. All of them share a passion for their work and are given to exploring paths which can serve as inspiration to others. From scientists to social entrepreneurs and from accomplished musicians to business leaders, we have over twenty passionate, deep, human beings ready to share their stories and their ideas. This is not going to be like any other conference you have been to.

Most conferences are vertical, concentrating on a tightly defined professional interest, business discipline, academic subject, etc. The very nature of TED, and by extension of TEDx, is horizontal. So instead of seeing one biologist talking to five hundred other biologists, you are likely to enter a circle where a biologist will be talking to an internet entrepreneur, a marketing expert and a tribal storyteller, and exactly where their ideas and their conversation will take them is anyone’s guess. What’s certain is they all will be passionate about what they’re doing and will be happy to share their specific knowledge with a hope of finding general inspiration.

-RT

With a little more than two weeks to go, we have closed the speaker roster and are about to announce the last few names. What a few months ago was a dream and an idea (worth sharing!) has taken shape well beyond what we had expected.

If you have registered for the event, and your submission has been successful, please look out for a confirmation email coming to you soon. If you are confident that you will be able to make it, please RSVP as soon as you get it. If you are in doubt, please consider releasing your booking, as the waiting list is long and getting longer by the day. (To release just do nothing when you receive the email.) You will still be able to check out the entire day on our live stream plus all talks will be recorded and published on our site before too long.

Our sponsorship team have been working very hard and have established relationships with a number of companies and organisations whose ethos lines up with “ideas worth sharing”. We will be making sponsorship announcements very soon. For now we would just like to say how grateful we are for the support we are receiving – the event will be all the better for it.

Even if you cannot make it to this iteration of TEDxWarsaw, please be sure we appreciate every visitor to our site and are in fact working to create a thriving community of TEDx fans in Poland and the general neighbourhood. News of this will be announced after the event. For now, please spread the word using your favourite social media platform, follow us on Twitter @tedxwarsaw and come have a chat on our Facebook page here.

See you, in person or virtually, on March 5. There are some surprises in store!
